The Spring of Life

The icon depicts the Mother of God sitting in the baptismal font, who holds little Jesus. This depiction of Our Lady is adopted from the "Kyriotissa" icon, respectively "Nikopoia" - The Ruler of Victory. At the beginning, the spring was not written on the icon, , later the goblet was introduced into the composition. Later, the "pond" and the fountain began to be added. Since there are quite a few "Spring of Life" icons, and they differ in greater or smaller detail from each other, different characters can be found around the main spring. In our icon we find monarchs with a crown on their heads who ask for water, priests who scold and give drink to others, we also see a mother with a child, lame people with accompaniment, a soldier who also asks for living water, ... In Greece it is possible to see the icon where the Spring of Life is planted immediately before the open grave and the "pond" is in the shape of a cross.

The center of the whole Icon of the Birth is a dark cave, a reminder of the darkness of sin in which mankind lived without God, from whom Jesus Christ came to save us, and at the same time is the image of the darkness of the grave in which Jesus was laid down after the crucifixion.
