The worship/adoration of the Mother of God – The Shelter is closely bound to the Siege of Constantinople by Saracens. Bibliography of Saint Andrew Jurodivi – the fool for God, depicts the apparition/revelation of the Mother of God in the Curch of Blachernae, where people were praying after the night-long contemplation. Saint Andrew was also present and with his disciple Epifanus they prayed for the whole night. Suddenly the magnificent/majestic figure of the Holy Mother of God appeared before their sight accompanied by Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. Immersed in her prayer her face was drowning in tears. She took her veil and raised it above her head, the veil unfolded above the heads of all the faithful. Everybody in the church sensed and felt her mercy and protection/shelter. Constantinople survived the siege and ever since that this motive has been portrayed on icons.
